Relapse Prevention with CBT

Relapse Prevention with CBT

The Pegasus clinical team is excited to announce the launch of a new Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) program.

Why CBT? Relapse often occurs because of harmful internal dialogues; perhaps one that perpetuates the belief that substance use will help in specific situations, or perhaps one that causes the person to believe that they can return to substance use without consequences. Relapse Prevention with CBT helps people struggling with addiction to identify their destructive internal dialogues, and to construct and practice a realistic and healthy dialogue in order to prevent relapse and achieve abstinent recovery.

In Relapse Prevention with CBT, participants are taught to practice CBT and DBT (dialectical behavioural therapy) in order to:

  • Prevent relapse to active substance use
  • Practice effective problem solving skills
  • Resolve relationship problems with effective communication
  • Tolerate emotional distress using DBT skills
  • Identify and work to overcome self-defeating behaviour patterns
  • Use CBT skills to cope with anxiety, depression, and historical trauma

About The Facilitator: The CBT group is facilitated by Alice Houston-Mais MSW, RCC. Alice has over 30 years in practice as an addictions counsellor and is a renowned expert in the field of CBT. Certified through the Academy of Cognitive Therapy, Alice trains and supervises new practitioners and also teaches CBT at the University of Victoria. In recent years, she completed extensive training in Dialectical Behavioural Therapy (DBT) and Cognitive Processing Therapy (CPT). Alice brings a wealth of knowledge and expertise to her clinical work, and teaches clients how to integrate CBT skills into their daily lives in order to prevent relapse and achieve long-term abstinence from substance use disorder.
